This looks promising. The Hellfire Club, The Dirt and Graham Robertson are putting on a Carter Family night this Saturday, 11th September in the Griffin bar. Should be a rollicking night and it sure beats burning the Koran.

Coming to You: The Fox Hunt.
Another string band from the good ole USA, the Fox Hunt apply a youthful vigour to the tried and tested American mores as purveyed by the likes of The Wilders and The Black Crown String Band. Hailing from Virginia their latest album “Long Way To Go,” is chock-full of fiddles, banjo and mandolin.
With an eye on tradition but a contemporary style there’s no gloss on their songs. They’re earthy and full of grit, as real as you can get and if they sound anything like the album a must to see. They’re playing The Classic Grand on Saturday, 17th July, and to top it all, according to a recent review they do a version of Plastic Jesus, a great song that I’ve only heard on crackled old vinyl so to hear it live would be a blessing, so altogether now………. Jesus, Plastic Jesus, sitting on the dashboard of my car………………..

Sarah Borges in Glasgow this weekend.
Sarah Borges and The Broken Singles last album, The stars are Out, was a fine example of power pop with a countrified slant and even some retro garage punk on I’ll Show You How. The twang guitar on No One Will Ever Love You was sublime, think of a female Chris Issak and you are almost there. Anyway, Sarah and chums pitch up in Lauries’ Acoustic Music Bar on Sunday night and it promises to be an intimate occasion, not the full on rock version but a slapping, toe tapping night if the evidence here is anything to go by.

R.I.P Mark Linkous
Coming after the suicide of Vic Chesnutt news today of the death of Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous is a great blow. Heaven help anyone who gets into such a dark place that death seems to be the only way out. Nothing really to say other than to send out thoughts to his family, friends and fans.
New Roky Erickson
News filtered out a few months ago of a new Roky album backed by Okkervil River, a band from his native Austin, Texas. Today we can hear the first fruit of this union and thankfully its a winner. Pitchfork have posted an MP3 of a song “Goodbye Sweet Dreams” from the forthcoming album which will be called “True Love cast Out All Evil.” From the opening it’s vintage Erickson and the band play a wonderfully sinister off kilter beat with squalling guitars while his vocals which include references to Pentagrams are almost as good as they have ever been.
The album will come out in the UK on Chemikal Underground. Hopefully its all as good as this offering. Head on over to Pitchfork and grab a listen.

Isn’t the internet great. I had this sent to me, podcasts from a bunch of esteemed folk (Victoria Williams, Freedy Johnston, Laura Cantrell, Peter Holsapple included). You can download a set of songs and read comments on them by the performers. Sign up and get them in your mailbox on a monthly basis, free! The oh so American presenter might be a little bit too cheesy to start with but persist and there are some gems here. Peter Blegvad’s “I had A dream, assisted by Andy Partridge” for example is excellent.

Michael Hurley
Sadly it seems as if Hurley is not going to be playing here this month as I reported earlier review of Ida Com Snock
Hopefully this will just be a temporary setback in his bid to conquer all right minded listeners and he’ll wing his way over at some point.
